Of Pacquaio and Bratz Games

Last week, the world stopped in my country. Everyone seemed to wait with bated breath. The world was a stand still. Traffic was down by 30 percent. Every restaurant, cinema, hotel function room, sports stadium and home was filled.

It is a known phenomenon in our country. Manny “The Pacman” Pacquaio is the most famous man in our country. With every fight he won, he inspires a lot of Filipinos to become greater than what they are. From a humble beginning as a baker, Manny Pacquaio became the best pound for pound fighter with his hard work, determination and a mean left hand punch. He was even nick-named The National Fist by our local media.

Whenever Manny Pacquaio fights everyone is glued in our TV sets. Every business establishment that has a TV set earns big bucks for letting people pay to watch the fight.

Local governments also show a free viewing of every Pacquaio fight in sports stadium. As a result, traffic decreases in cities and crime rate also goes down. But the most exciting time happened last Dec. 7, I was referring to the fight between Manny Pacquaio and Oscar de la Hoya. It was a highly anticipated fight. Oscar de la Hoya is the biggest name in boxing industry. The Golden Boy is the world champion in ten weight divisions. The Pacman is the world champion in six weight divisions. De la Hoya is the 5’10” while Pacquaio is 5’6”. Some people say that it is a lopsided fight with bets in favor of De la Hoya. As the attention of the world turns to MGM Grand, it was indeed a lopsided fight.

Manny humbled Oscar after the eighth round. It was a pitiable sight. Oscar was like a walking punching bag, and a whole country rejoiced.

However, there are some skeptics that did not believe that it is a fair fight. They think that it was all just play acting and that Oscar deliberately lost to win more money betting against him. Now this is just total crap. Some people just cannot be happy with the success of others. I mentioned this because another news came to my attention: Barbie games vs Bratz games. Bratz games and all its other merchandise have become a hit these past years. Bratz games almost come to be at par with Barbie and because of that Bratz games and its dolls are now subject to litigation. The original doll company claims that Bratz games was made while its creator was working with Mattel. Because of this there is now a danger that the Bratz brand will now cease to exist. All because of one company that cannot stand some healthy company for fear of losing their market share. (Though they have every reason to for in just a short span of six years, a previously unheard of company is gaining on a decades old company.) Which leaves me to wonder again: Can’t some people be happy for the success of others?
